The Fankle Chain
The first version of my Fankle chain was created in 2011 during my Master’s at Edinburgh College of Art. I was obsessed with making triangular links in stainless steel, and from there began my journey into chain-making. Constantly inspired by my island home, I started to see a link between the fishing nets that surround me and the wearable chains I was creating, a connection that continues to flow through my collections today.
I love the repetitive, meditative process of making these chains, the rhythmic bending of each link, the careful joining, and the moment when it all comes together. Every Fankle chain is unique, carrying the mark of my hands and the thread of my craftsmanship throughout.
People are naturally drawn to these necklaces for their movement, timeless design, and versatility. My own studio uniform is usually simple, block colours and these chains are the perfect finishing touch for everyday wear, effortlessly lightweight yet full of character.
In the video below, I share a few of my favourite ways to wear the Fankle chain. Whether you prefer it long and fluid, or wrapped shorter for a layered look, each length brings out a different character in the design.
I’ve made the Fankle chain in a few different finishes over the years, from polished silver to 18ct gold plated silver and stainless steel, each with its own personality and feel against the skin. The beauty of this design is its adaptability: it can be dressed up or down, worn solo or layered, and always adds that quiet statement of craftsmanship and strength.
